As I sit here watching light rain fall on Waiheke, with the potential for something a lot heavier later in the day, I am at least grateful that 2019 will likely put a much bigger smile on the faces of the local wine producers than the previous three challenging vintages, especially for red wines. While I have spoken to only a selection of the wine producers on the island it’s likely that all of the white varieties were harvested in great condition and as of 1st April plenty of red varieties as well (Malbec, Merlot, some Syrah, and even some Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc). Many are reporting that the grapes are at least two plus weeks ahead of the usual harvest dates and grapes are in excellent condition.
Let’s hope the weather gods play ball over the next few weeks!
